- Metronome (www.metronomeonline.com)
- Instrument and Bow
Begin by removing your should rest or shoulder pad. Playing these warmups on open strings without a shoulder rest is liberating. It allows you to remain stress free while playing and you will become more "in tune" with your instrument.

Beginning on the second highest string on your instrument (A string for violin, D string for viola) complete the following patterns on each string
Metronome = 60bpm
Metronome = 60bpm
- Starting at the frog, draw a full bow, allowing 4 clicks on the metronome before changing bow directions. Repeat this 4 times per string. (down, up, down, up)
- Rebeat steps 1 at the following dynamics: mf, mp, p, f.
- Starting at the frog, draw a full bow allowing 3 clicks, and on the 4th click, change bow directions. Essentially this is a down bow dotted half note (3 clicks) and an up bow quarter note(1 click). Keep the same dynamic level on the 1 click bow. This means lighter arm weight!
- Reverse number 3. Start on a quarter note down bow, and an up bow dotted quarter note.
